1/100 MG AMX-004-3 Qubeley Mk-II

8 July 2006

Today i used a pin vise, I took the stuff from the mechaskunk store, drilled some holes and squeezed assorted chain onto the qubeley. I like the way the belt turned out, but the snake chain looks a little too small. Another thing I failed to realise is that the snake chain has limited “bendability” because of the way it is. Well, if it could bend as much as you like then it wouldn’t look like snake chain anymore. Anyway I was lucky and it could bend into the holes I drilled out with some.. uh.. “persuasion”. I also managed to acquire some spectable screws from my optician friend whose shop is in concourse 2nd floor. He gave me about 10 screws. When i asked other shops for these screws one of them quoted me $1 a piece. I don’t know about you but that sounds ridiculous to me. The pointy tips i managed to sand quite some time ago, managed to take picture tonight. Well, this thing is coming along slowly but surely and is the first kit i so enjoy the process. Usually I just want to finish up the kit and display it. Anyhow, let the pictures do the talking!

Qubeley Torso

The materials I used tonight. Belt, snake chain and spectacle screws.

Close up of the parts. The screws make nice miniature minus moulds. Great stuff!

I cut out the heat sink the other day because i’m gonna make it a shiny chrome as advised below in the comments section.

Qubeley - Pointy Tips

Pointy tips! these were really fragile. I poked one on my finger and it sort of cracked.

Qubeley Torso

Notice the middle on is different? that was the one i broke. So i tried the superglue+dettol poweder thing and it worked like a charm! Just that i had to put the mixture on twice to get enough material to sand and make pointy. Strength-wise its MUCH tougher than the epoxy. It could give you a few painful jabs on your skin without breaking.

Life’s been quick and busy with no time for this guy. When school started, I felt abit overwhelmed so I took some time out to glue on all the details and to prime as much of the finished parts as i could. This way i can track my progress as i slowly prime the whole kit bit by bit and do a photoshoot before i go ahead to paint it. I’ve alway wanted to take phoos of my primed kits but i end up scratching them. This time I’ll be really careful. As usual, the picture (and captions) will do the talking.

The braided tubing in the fins are showing up quite decently. In the end I have decided to follow the MK-II red colour scheme exactly because of the context I will place this model in - means no shiny heatsinks, I’ve glued them back into place after cutting them out for nothing.. haha. Anyway I’ve never done anything like what before and it’ll be big! At least bigger than all I’ve ever done. I’m putting my heart into this one and its turning out really great! Now I think putting in effort and really likeing the model you’re doing is very essential to making a great kit.

He’s got blu-tack in his eyes to mask them. I’ve left space to install LEDs but i think i’m giving up the ones on the wing binders, its just too dfficult to wire and detail at the same time. The mechaskunk belt feed chain is looking really good on the left shoulder. I decided to leave the right side as a cut-away hence no chain. Added a pla plate on the right chest to add some detail. the optical screws i got from my optician friend have also gone on the front lower corners of the shoulder blocks. I found out he’s going to the Standard Chartered Marathon. Cool! I’ll be going too!

Qubeley (52).JPG

Heres a view of the shoulder block. I filled it with epoxy putty and sanded off the detail, it was too cheesy and common. I prefer a super-clean flat look on this part.

Qubeley (53).JPG

The top of the right shoulder near the head has been cutaway and a snake chain put inside. Again, a feature of a cut-away thingy. Notice the right shoulder block has been cut to reveal the shoulder ball joint? I had to fill up some areas to block the view of the hollow interior.

Top view. Look real closely at the 2 shoulders and you’ll notice the differences.

Ah.. I think pazu needs to make a qubeley bust next! haha.. It would look pretty great.

Well, I spent a while geebling up the wing binder tonight. Finally plucked up my courage and threw whatever apprehension out of my open window. Its not as great as this but its all I can do for now without buying those option parts and all. Really wonder if its worth all that money. I took a bunch of capacitors i ripped out from an old computer thingy. Some soldering wire, Astray goldframe parts leftover and the existing copper tube. Pictures below!

Qubeley (56).JPG

Ah.. nice shiny amatsu parts. They reused the red frame sprues, resulting in a whole right arm not used. I snipped and trimmed some parts out and stuck them on. Some capacitors i stripped teh rubber off. Got too lazy and left it on for the rest. Didn’t make a difference! I tink i should have stck on more stuff but I’m lacking spare parts here, not much choice.

Qubeley (57).JPG

Primed.. So much nicer looking like this.

Qubeley (58).JPG

The other wing is just sitting there waiting for me to dress it up.

Qubeley (59).JPG

Despite how it looks, its quite a terrible fit. I did test out the fit while i was gluing parts but i didn’t expect it to be so bad. Some small oversights made the armor not fit at all. So after i took all these pictures i had to snad down a few parts. Nothing too visible though.

Another picture of the internals. I think i shall leave it as this.
