Canon EOS 50D DSLR and the Nikon 90D DSLR wooooooo… haha… its a first! Video from a DSLR. Gross.. and Canon made an idiot camera. Has options in one of the “creative auto” modes that are in plain english like “make background blur” and “Make picture lighter”. haha..
Anyway, left my phone at home today.. so weird and disconnected. Inconvenient at the very least. Took somemore pictures with the Rollei.. one of my class when I demo-ed it to them.. and also one on the MRT platform of some construction workers. I just noticed my wide angle is blurry. haha.. oh well.
I went e-bay mad and spent some time looking at VERY cheap cool stuff! Viewfinder for about $15 plus shipping!! think at most it’ll bid until about $20 and a rangefinder (literally finds the range, not referring to the camera) in MINT condition. I saw it going for $40 but somehow this fella’s shop not in the searches and the start bid is like 5 bucks. So i’m going to try for it nearing the end. Wish me luck! I’ll be at dinner when its due!

Funky Shocks on the motorbike.
Took it on the way to school in the car. It had this pretty suspension system.

Well, yesterday my post got eaten up so I’ll just write everything one more time.
Well, as some of you might know, I kinda lost the gamble with the US warranty. My camera went haywire and now its taking a trip to the US to get repaired before coming home. Out came the olympus again. So.. I thought I’d get another camera for fun and for cheap (very important).. specifically the film kind.
Goodness knows how I was sucked into the whole world of old skool cameras, holgas and lomos but it happened and intending to spend about ten bucks with a disposable including processing to do a photo a day for a month, I ended up looking at cameras anywhere from 20-2000USD.
Well, I did mention about how godliness with contentment is great gain and not really intending to do anything about what I said I went to bed that night.
The next day I must say I woke up with zero desire to get a camera, must have been divine intervention. haha.. after lunch with pastor and my family, I went with my bro to buy some small camera stuff from peninsular plaza
but I wasn’t so interested. Some good condition rangefinder at $140 was just too much for a fling with film. So, I went over to the hotel side and a Rollei 35S caught my eye.
My dad has one
and I’ve seen it before but It was really quite a complicated piece of engineering! So much so I didn’t know how to cock the shutter, open it and change film and the like. It was originally made in Germany and then production was shifted to Singapore in 1976 (I think). This particular one is the less sought after Singapore made one (German made one more expensive) but with the very highly sought after Sonnar 40mm/2.8 Lens so its worth about $300-$400? haha..
So I ased the man to show me under the guise of being interested and he showed me how it worked to a basic degree. I went home to check out the camera once again with my newfound know-how and managed to operate it.
I spent the afternoon cleaning it properly and then went for dinner with family at toa payoh. Managed to get a roll of film for $4on the way back
and came home to try it. Loading was simple but I was so chicken and scared I would spoil something that I went to look around for a manual. Got the film loaded
And I was ready to go! haha.. Took a few photos in my own room. Some during dinner and also at the airport and school today. YX asked me to show her. LOL. But I heard in the forums that its quite common people ask you even though somehow they know you’re shooting with film they still don’t really get the concept cos its so antiquated to actually have to get it processed first.
I said in my eaten up post that God seems to take care of everything. Even sometimes the frivolous things that are not important in life such as this little engineering wonder that’s been sitting preserved in the drybox since forever. Reminds me of how Shuyi will share even the funniest small blessings she recieves with such enthusiasm.
Anyhow, today I dropped by Sungei road with the intent to look around for something useful or to buy and sell at a profit.Look! Its Golden Axe 3!! haha..
The stories of treasures found here are few but those that hit jackpot exist. I got myself a $20 utterly useless videocam. I wanted its wide angle converter lens and had to buy the whole thing. Its totally worth it. Check it out. Its like a diamond on a pile of dung. haha..
I took it home and cleaned it up really really good. Originally for my Canon G9, my hands got itchy and I fitted it on my olympus. The barrel sizes are a perfect match. I could tape it on the retracting lense without any problem at all. The photos are funky wide la! with lotsa vignetting in macro mode and just plain cut off corners in normal AF mode. SO.. I left it taped on and I’ll see what I can do with it. Focusing seems to be very slightly off.. But no biggie.. worst case just manually set everything. heh..
Without lens
With lens
Super Macro mode (subtle vignette)
My room.. which is still always in the neverending process of packing.
Its dina the dinosaur! but quite deflated..
Here’s the camera with then lens taped on. It retracts without problem! haha.. now I have to look for a 48mm (I think) lenscap. With the lens converter on its widest is 24mm I think. That’s decently wide.
A cheery end to a long day spent in school

Haha..
Anyway, to cut a super long story short – I wrote in great detail and animation about my new aquisition before my post got eaten up by wordpress. It was about my first step into film photography. Its just too long to write all over again.. sigh.. and I won’t say anything cos it just has to be told in full! with all the gory details! haha..

I’ve been hit by this interest in low-tech cameras. All mechanical hunks of metal. Snap photo, advance film, snap, advance, reach end, wind film back by hand kinds. I’ve been eye-ing some on E-bay and they are (relatively) not expensive. from $20-$80. Yes, of course its film.. costs about $10 a roll including processing and scanning (not going to print anything). Film just has this feeling which digital doesn’t. Also, the raw all mechanical thing is so cool! these things are tough and can take as many pictures as you have film. No batteries, no tech.. Pure photography.
Another thing is this Voigtlander viewfinder I can stick on top of my camera to use as a viewfinder since the inbuilt one is so crap. Why not use the LCD you askl? haha.. I read that the feeling of looking at the subject directly is different from looking in the LCD, also, the blocking out of everything other than what you arte taking is also different. But the analogue feel of a rangefinder cannot be replaced by digital I guess.. digital is just too perfect sometimes.. Sharp photos, fancy optics.. all dime a dozen.. becomes.. anonymous after a while of looking at such hi-fi photos. The only thing stopping me.. is the $136USD pricetag. hahahaha.. I could get a very nice lo-tech camera for that money!
Oh man.. Sigh.. this one start already no coming back. haha.. All this cos my camera is wonky, due for servicing and I just wanted to look for something fun to use for a month or two and then dump aside. Was at cash converters but the cameras there are in bad condition. There was a minolta all mechanical SLR but the mirror was locked-up. Too bad, it looked quite fun to try out actually with a decent old skool lens that was the push/pull to zoom and twist at the same time to focus kind, rubber lenshood too..
Oh well, I’m not going to spend so much time looking. It fills you with this unhealthy desire to buy stuff you don’t need on a whim. I shall see if there are any good deals which I can liquidate at a profit in future when I’m not interested anymore. Shall study and get some banners done first! Sometimes I look at people earn $$$ then spend.. so pointless right? haha.. I mean.. I want all these but I feel its such a waste at the same time.
1 Timothy 6:6 (ESV) says:
6Now there is great gain in(A) godliness(B) with contentment, 7for(C) we brought nothing into the world, and[a] we cannot take anything out of the world. 8But(D) if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. 9But(E) those who desire to be rich fall into temptation,(F) into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that(G) plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10For the love of money is a root of(H) all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.
Fight the Good Fight of Faith
11But as for you,(I) O man of God,(J) flee these things.(K) Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness.
So.. Haha.. Oh well.
