Flakey Internet Access at Home..
Fixed my linksys router which had trouble connecting over the weekend. It had to do with the DCHP lease time that my ISP provides. Since its only 4 hours, the router has to request for a new IP each time the lease runs out. Somehow, the router does not pick up a a new lease by itself and it has to be reset. This causes alot of grief.. especially when you want to use the net and find out you have to reset the router.
I read that alot of people have this problem and some ISPs even have lease times as short as an hour! And I though I had it bad.. My parents have been screaming about it and so we replace our aging 3COM router with a Linksys wrt350n. It didn’t work as I hoped it did, only worse. The Linksys had no reset button or function in the admin console. So when it disconnected it could not be reset.
I found that the router could be flashed with 3rd party firmwares which allow great control and function in this particular HWZ thread. The amount of control is awesome! I can even set the transmission power, set it on cron jobs and make it reset every few hours if I like. Its been up for about 8 hours, 2 lease times already. Should not have any problems this week I hope.
Sigh.. back to school again. Tests on Monday and Wednesday. I need to apply for ee2009 lab.. how troublesome.
